How it all started...
The Hendersonville Church of God started from a small group of Hendersonville residents back in the early 70's. Their strong desire and urging to plant a church in this small, but rapidly growing town became a reality. At the time, Hendersonville was what some would call a "wide spot in the road" around the intersection of Gallatin and Old Shackle Island Roads.
The beautiful little town sitting on Old Hickory Lake began to attract many folks from Nashville, and the population had grown from 1000 in 1960 to over 12,000 in 1970. Many of the country music stars like Conway Twitty, Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, Johnny Cash, and many others also called Hendersonville their home. It was not unusual to see some of these folks in attendance from time to time at the Hendersonville Church of God, and to join in with the congregation in songs of praises to the Lord! Their support was instrumental in helping the church answer the call of ministry to the Hendersonville and surrounding communities.
Reverend Luther Turner was the original pastor of the church when it was officially established in 1972. The current church building was finished in 1974, and until that time the church met in the former Phillips-Robinson funeral home located just north of the intersection of Gallatin Road and Old Shackle Island Road. The structure is now gone, but their investment in the spreading of the gospel lives on as our church continues to share the love of Christ.
In 1992, an expansion of the original structure was completed. The Sam Phillips Administrative building includes offices, classrooms, a full kitchen, gymnasium and baptismal.
Many folks have attended this church over the past 50 years. We worship together, pray together, work together, laugh together, cry together, serve together, and we grow together. God meets with us here and His love sustains us.
